The Lipowiec Castle ... the castle was erected at the end of the 13th century by the bishop John Muskata. Throughout five consecutive centuries the castle was the property of Krakow bishops. At first it served for defensive and protective purposes of a merchant route.
Until the end of the 16th century it had been a prison for people under servitude of Krakow bishops and became a reformatory house for clergymen in the following years. The exceptional character of the castle is emphasized by a 28 meter tall (around 68 feet) tower, which had been the core part of the castle.
Until the 19th century the roof and the interior of the castle had been destroyed by fire as many as three times. From 1850 the castle had been looted by nearby inhabitants and treasure hunters that eventually lead to the destruction of the castle.
In the 1960’s conservation works were undertaken to secure the ruins. The castle has become a part of an open air Museum in Chrzanów. Now the castle serves as a venue for numerous events related to its history and medieval times throughout the whole year.
